Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella doesn’t dismiss possibility of Sam Altman returning to OpenAI

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella indicated on Monday that he was still open to Sam Altman joining OpenAI – despite announcing earlier in the day that Altman would be joining Microsoft’s artificial intelligence innovation division.

Nadella said he was “open to all options” when asked in a CNBC interview on Monday whether Altman would indeed join Microsoft.

Nadella stated, “Look, it’s up to the OpenAI board, management, and staff.” We have made the decision to work with OpenAI, and we want to do so going forward. Obviously, this will depend on whether the OpenAI employees choose to stay with them or move to Microsoft.

Chat GPT maker OpenAI was thrown into turmoil on Friday when its board abruptly fire Altman. One of the largest investors in OpenAI, with a $13 billion stake, is Microsoft.

The firings followed a weekend of chaos: OpenAI’s president, Greg Brockman, resigned, and hundreds of OpenAI employees threatened to walk out over Altman’s firing. The company has also appointed interim CEO Meera Murtini.

On Monday, OpenAI announced Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear as its new interim CEO — and Microsoft said it would appoint Altman. After this announcement, Microsoft’s shares closed at an all-time high.

Despite the fluid situation of leadership at OpenAI, reports soon surfaced that Altman was considering returning to the company.

Microsoft is still committe to OpenAI and Altman, Nadella said, “regardless of the configuration.”

Even if they weren’t at OpenAI, we clearly want Sam and Greg to have a great home,” he said.

Asked about Microsoft’s stance on OpenAI and the possibility of gaining a board seat, Nadella said. “It’s clear that something has to change around governance.”

In a separate interview on Kara Swisher’s “ON” podcast on Monday, Nadella was asked if he would bee considere for the CEO role at Microsoft if Altman one day joins the company.
