AP provided the following recent soccer story:
THE AP: Manchester, England Two referees who incorrectly disallowed Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool against Tottenham last month will be back on the job this weekend for the Premier League.
Video assistant referee Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook have been recalled for the first time since their error in Tottenham’s 2-1 win.
England will be the fourth official for Brentford’s game against Burnley on Saturday and Cook is assistant for Sheffield United’s match against Manchester United on the same day.
His failure to award what would have been the opening goal for Diaz prompted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to call for the Premier League to replay the game. It led to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the body governing referees in England, announcing changes to video review protocol.
Bodi admitted error after VAR failed to award Diaz’s goal, with replays clearly showing the forward was onside when he scored. When audio of the decision-making process was released, it became clear that the video review official mistakenly believed the goal had been awarded by the onfield officials and did not overturn the call. However, Diaz was whistled for offside.
Given the obvious need for development and resolution, Liverpool declared in a statement that it will look into a variety of solutions.
When he demanded a rematch, Klopp went farther.
I’m used to making bad selections and challenging choices, but anything like this has never happened, therefore I believe a replay is the proper course of action, he added.
Next that loss, Liverpool lost more ground when they drew with Brighton the next week. Tottenham, meanwhile, went top of the standings with a 1-0 win over Luton.
The PGMOL has increased communication amongst video assistant referees as part of its protocol revisions. He also said he would reiterate that speed of decision-making should not come at the expense of accuracy.
